Finding an SEO Company

Finding an SEO CompanyUntil recently this was a nearly impossible endeavor. Now there is a group, SEMPO.com, who is trying to unionize the industry. Whether you appreciate that kind of thing or not, it does give you a place to find centralized information and endorsements on different Search Engine Optimization companies.

When looking down their Member Directory there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Avoid companies that guarantee a position. They are lying. There is no way that anyone can dictate where a search engine will place a site.
  • Look for someone who offers a month-to-month contract. Many of the search engine optimization tactics can give you numbers one time, but they have no long term strength. If the numbers start seriously slipping, be able to easily drop their services.
NOTE: it is normal for positioning to slip. But if it continues for several months, find a different company.
  • Make sure that they can optimize your type of site. With all of the different types of site technology and server languages, no one company can optimize every type of site.
  • Ask for examples. And then use common sense; are the phrases they are using really going to bring in traffic, or are the phrases so obscure that there is no real competition?
  • What kind of maintenance plan do they offer? Your site can do well one month and slip into oblivion the next.
  • Do they use Pay-per-Click to get your numbers? The numbers need to be real organic search results.
  • The reports should be at least monthly.
  • Do they offer real customer service? You need to know that you can get a hold of someone if you have a question. Automated systems spell disaster.

Quality search engine optimization is costly because of the time it takes to truly work with someone's site. Figure $2000 initially and around $400 a month there after, depending on the complexity of your site. Every site is created different and it takes time to figure out how it was built to optimize it properly. If a company just adds generic pages to your site then you are getting the same pages as hundreds of other sites. At best all their sites will rank equally, but this type of work can easily be detected by the search engines and it does not give long lasting results.

I personally not only provide monthly reports, but I also send out personalized emails that describe what was done to each individual site. If something about the site could be changed to provide better results, this also is shared with the site owner. Good service requires hard work and a willingness to interact with the client. Make sure you are getting the most for your money.
