The Definitive Guide to PageRank

Google Page Rank PageRank is one of the greatest misunderstood aspects of Search Engine Optimizaton (SEO). Whether you are new to the SEO or not, PageRank is an important part of nearly all client dialog. With that in mind, Danny Sullivan has put together one of those fabulously comprehensive articles that he is famous for and that answers ton of commonly asked questions about PageRank.

There is some really good information in here. Danny talks about what PageRank is, why it came into use, how it you can view the estimates, why PageRank isn't the key to good rankings (but rather one of many keys) and quite a range of other topics.

It's a pretty long article, so Danny has broken it down into sections. That way you can read the entire article, or jump right to what interests you.

My Conclusion... which is just worded a little different...

PageRank is more complex than explained here, but Danny gave a really good overview. In a nutshell PageRank...

  • provides a way of factoring a page's importance against other pages.

  • is just one of many many factors used in computing a page's positioning in the search engine result pages.

  • is not a guarantee of placing a page above a lower ranking page in the search engine results. If it was a guarantee then only PR10 sites would appear on page one for any search made.

  • is less important that the anchor text of a link.

  • should not be used in finding sites for link requests. Instead, contact the sites that appear on page one of a search as these are the pages that Google cares about.

  • is not the same as what is shown in Google's toolbar as PageRank; the toolbar rank is often outdated older data for the public to wonder about.
